Sarah + Jonathan: Salt Lake City Wedding

January 25, 2013 •

Sarah and Jonathan were married on a quiet January morning–the quietest I’ve ever seen Temple Square. It was like we had the whole place to ourselves! The magical morning sunrise outdid the cold, and they survived. Only these two could make such a frigid day look so beautiful.

They were surrounded by so many friends and family on their special day–as in line going out the door for hours and hours at the reception–and it just goes to show how lovable these two are. They have a way of bringing people together and making everyone feel like the most important person in the world. It was beautiful to see how many dear friends they had there to support them on the biggest day of their lives.

Sarah and Jonathan, thank you so much for letting me be part of such a wonderful, wonderful day. It was an honor.

Fine Art Wedding Albums: The Best Way To Tell Your Wedding Story

January 24, 2013 •

While digital files give you the chance to archive your photos forever, I strongly believe that albums are the best way to showcase your photos and tell the story of your wedding day.

Think with me: the first thing you do when you see a friend’s album on the coffee table? You open it up, pore over every page, and relive the magic and beauty of the day. Even if you saw your friend’s disc of digital files, you wouldn’t beg her to pop them in and click through them on her computer.

utah wedding albums

This is why I’m so excited to offer these albums: they’re not just something pretty that will die a slow, horrible death on your computer; they are the perfection of your wedded bliss bottled beautifully for a treasured heirloom to be cherished forever.

We make this happen with:

The Finest Materials–in the world.  I’ve searched high and low for albums I could feel proud to offer–and boy oh boy, do I ever! The rich Japanese silk fabrics will hold up no matter how many times you look through that gorgeous thing; the Italian nabuk leathers are super-soft and super durable–this isn’t your average plastic-y gag-me-slick leather. The pages are 2mm thick, with Fuji crystal archive paper and a coating to withstand sticky baby hands. 🙂 Lay-flat binding is micro-creased, which means it’s crafted to be the least noticeable–so your wedding story is told without interruption.

The other thing that makes these albums stand out and last forever:

Custom Design. I’m drawn to simple, ultra-clean design for the most beautiful way to display your images. I also offer completely customizable design with unlimited photo swaps with purchase of a wedding album.

But, Brooke, what do these designs look like? They sound pretty, but I wanna see!  Here you are, my dear.

But, Brooke, I wanna see a FULL album design! All the photos in all the pages!

As you wish. See a full 20 page 10×8 album design here.

*All past wedding clients who didn’t have the option of purchasing a wedding album should have received an email from me about albums with a very, very special offer–if you are a past wedding client and didn’t receive such an email, let me know and I’ll send it on over!

*Many photos of the albums themselves are not mine. Photo credits clockwise from top: Claire Penn, Scott Vuocolo, Kim Hawkins, Ben Sasso, Sachin Khona, Carolina Photosmith, W&E Photography.

Interested in creating a fine art wedding album of your special day? Let’s talk about it.

Baby Girl.

January 17, 2013 •

wedding photographers in provoBaby Girl wiggles and kicks inside of me every day and it still doesn’t feel real.

That I’m going to be a mom. That I am a mom already. That I’m going to birth a child that will eventually grow up and maybe birth children of her own.

Life is nuts, you guys.

I just want to give this little one the best life in the world. It’s frustrating knowing that I’m going to make mistakes…and possibly/probably big ones, too.

I had none of these issues going into marriage because I’m not in charge of Jared–his happiness or his safety or his development. But this little girl will be all mine to love and protect and nurture and it’s…super scary sometimes.

baby photographers in provoI’m 26 weeks along with this baby girl. I giggle every night to my husband about snuggling her and watching her sleep and doing all kinds of crazy-obsessed-parent things. I don’t know what her name will be or have a clue what she’ll look like or if she’ll be mad for jazz music and creating like her mama or a sports guru/acoustic guitar master like her daddy. Also I want her to be able to talk to me right away and tell me how she feels about everything so we can have a constant stream of girl talk from the moment she is born.

I wander into her soon-to-be room and touch her teeny tiny clothes and the soft hats with ears on them, the blankets lovingly embroidered by such kind, generous people. Being pregnant is so strange–I’ve never been more on-the-verge and thrilled and excited and unsure and simultaneously so very sure that this is the best thing to ever happen to me besides marrying the love of my life.

I feel for the many women who don’t get to live the dream I’m living, worries and all.

I have so much tenderness for families and women who struggle to conceive or aren’t married and wish so badly to start a family. There have been times when I’ve felt guilty that it was so easy for me–I kept waiting for something to be terribly wrong with Baby Girl to make up for everything going so smoothly. I wish there was a wonderful way to share all my excitement and thoughts and worries while being sensitive to those for whom this topic is so tender and gut-wrenching.

I guess all I can say is: I see you. I love you. I suppose that’s all any of us want–to be seen, and loved.

……………..

Celebrate the love in your life with winter mini sessions–I’m filling up my February and March calendar so I can do all kinds of baby-snugglin’ in April and May. If you’re interested in a mini session, spots are limited, so let’s talk!

4 Things I Probably Shouldn’t Tell You

January 11, 2013 •

provo photographyI’m constantly striving for authenticity in my life, business, and photography. But today I’m really going out on a limb, and telling you things I probably shouldn’t. It’s unprofessional. It’s mushy. There are no snappy tips or practical advice. But I hope you feel connection in knowing another human feels these things like you have, and that you’ll glean some kernel of wisdom for your own soulful life.

1. For the past seven days, I’ve been an emotional disaster. This morning, I woke up crying and telling my husband that I’m a failure.

Yeah, see. You didn’t want to know that, did you? Did you come here for pretty photos and some generic sentence about how great my life is, about how perfect I am at making dinner and photographing everything and cleaning my gigantic house? It’s not real. In the middle of our cravings for Pinterest-ready perfection, we know it can’t possibly be real. It isn’t real. This is the double-edged part of photography: we can use it either to contrive ‘perfection’ or to celebrate the authentic beauty of imperfection. I, crazily enough, think it’s possible to do both. (Weren’t expecting that, were you?! You were expecting it to be all hippie-let-it-all-hang-out love up in here. Bhah! Let me explain.) You should look better than you’ve ever looked in professional photos. But it should be thanks to the photographer’s artistic genius, her ability to see beauty in you, and your own willingness to be vulnerable and present in the sometimes (okay, pretty much all the times) terrifying experience of being photographed. It’s through that process that we make both stunningly beautiful I-can’t-believe-that’s-me! photos and stunningly beautiful that’s-so-me photos. We human beings are very multifaceted. Photographs have the power to capture all of who we are.

2. I haven’t shaved my legs in weeks.

Even though I wrote to you party animals on The Soul Train about self-care, I’ve been neglecting it myself in a lot of ways. Some days I’d rather keep that extra warm layer than be socially presentable, I guess. And maybe shaving my legs is more a chore than a way to take care of myself, but: self-care isn’t always pleasant or desirable in the moment. Think eating fresh, raw food instead of the 13 cookies your mouth is watering for.

3. I’m going for instant gratification.

I’m reading Danielle LaPorte’s The Firestarter Sessions (so.good.read.it.now.) and she’s got me convinced: Why on earth would we delay gratification on purpose? Now I’m really getting out there. Didn’t I just tell you not to eat those 13 cookies? Here’s the thing. We train ourselves to believe there’s no substitute for hard work, no pain no gain, nothing good comes easily. And lots of times, that’s true. But sometimes it’s not. Sometimes, the easy thing–the thing that’s falling into our laps, the thing that seems to flow naturally–is the best.

So I’m finding ways to say ‘yes’ to myself more often.

Yes, you can start a new pretty journal even if your old one isn’t finished. (Okay, I’m a nerd. Love it or leave it alone.) Yes, you can tweak that recipe even though it might be awful. Yes, you can shower twice in a day if you want to. I’m realizing how many harmless desires I can fulfill–and how many times I am inclined to shut myself down for a hundred unwritten reasons. It’s a practice in nurturing and validating yourself instead of believing that stifling your desires, thoughts, and impulses is the noble, right, and practical thing to do.

utah portrait photographers4. I am more unsure about the future than I ever have been. Like, in my whole life.

I still know everything will be okay. Or, at least, that’s what I tell myself a hundred times a day. 🙂 But with Baby Girl on her way and a husband in graduate school I wonder how far my free-spirited artistic brain can carry me in a world where cars break down, things cost money, and my mailbox is full of logistics to take care of. I can’t hide behind school anymore. I can’t pretend I have a snazzy foolproof five-year plan. I’m flying by the seat of my pants here, peeps, and the rubber is meeting the road–it’s starting to matter big time. I’m about to be in charge of another human. ………………………. Hey. Thanks for listening. Really. Will you join me out on this crazy limb and give a ‘one thing I probably shouldn’t tell you…’ in the comments? ……………………….. Brooke Schultz is a Provo-based Utah wedding and lifestyle photographer who is passionate about keepin’ it real and taking authentically beautiful photos of soulful people. She finds nerdy pleasure in pretty new journals, inky pens, and musty bookstores. She’s really into glitter and yoga and digging her toes into the mud. She’d also love to photograph your beautiful self–the juicy details of which can be found here.

Jennifer + Tyler: Aspen Grove Anniversary Photos

January 8, 2013 •

Jennifer and Tyler were wed in Vermont and took advantage of the mountainous Utah winter landscape to capture a few more photos in the middle of newlywed bliss.

Working with Jennifer and Tyler was a photographer’s dream come true. I told you, they’re like movie stars–but the most down to earth movie stars you’ll ever meet. Jennifer was absolutely stunning in her blush Nancy Barrus Couture gown, and Tyler’s Beckett & Robb suit with a fedora? Um, yes. Silver screen, here they come.

But the real magic of people and photos can’t just be their fabulous style and ridiculous good looks. For Jennifer and Tyler, the magic is in adventurous love, wild dreams and spontaneity–the kind that led them to move to upstate New York and buy a darling bed and breakfast.  It suits them perfectly, because they are the most open-hearted, welcoming duo.

I’m thanking my lucky stars that I got to photograph Jennifer and Tyler’s picture-perfect love. Thank you, you two, for inviting me into the circle of your hospitality and friendship.

See the Martha Stewart feature of their wedded rapture!
