Jessica + Cameron: Backyard Draper Wedding

December 12, 2013 •

I can’t say enough wonderful things about the beautiful, generous, kind beyond all reason duo that is Jessica and Cameron. They welcomed me with open arms into their wedding day, and their big hearts combined made for a whole lot of beaming and smiling and grinning and giggles and love. It was obvious how thrilled every friend and family member was for them–that kind of all-inclusive bliss is what I live for as a photographer.

It was the most perfect fall day, sunshine and leaves and even warmth. Well, after the wind that is. (But I’m not-so-secretly obsessed with wind, so I didn’t mind.)

Jessica and Cameron, thank you for letting me be part of the biggest and best day of your new life together. You are a remarkable pair, and I can’t wait to see all the wonders you do together.

Brooke Schultz photographs handmade, homegrown weddings with soul and couples who are madly in love. If you are one such a couple with one such a wedding, see the details about wedding photography with Brooke here, or contact her about your big day.

The Beechers: Lifestyle Family Session

December 11, 2013 •

Meeting this little Madison girl was exquisite. I just kept hugging her and hugging her. What a precious soul.

You might remember this beautiful family from their maternity photos when Madison wasn’t here yet. Now she is and she’s the dreamiest little one–I heard her cry mayyybe twice through the course of a week. No exaggeration. She’s got the aloha spirit from her mama for sure.

Garrett and Alisha, I love you both more than I’ll ever be able to say. Add Madison in the mix and my heart is positively exploding.

Branch Out. But Creatively.

December 10, 2013 •

I’d never made a full on layer cake before, but I kept wanting to try.

So I made the entire thing from scratch, chocolate with chocolate cream cheese frosting and berries and I even made TWO.

It was a two day project, buying equipment and selecting very carefully the recipes I would try for the frosting and the cake, and how would I decorate it? My kitchen was soaked in butter and cocoa and dusted with a snowfall of powdered sugar. (Sounds kind of divine when I put it that way…in other words, it was a mess.)

Coming out with the finished product, though, I felt insanely proud.

What I didn’t expect: I felt creatively refreshed, recharged, ready to tackle again the problems in my craft and my business.

Try something new is not revolutionary advice.

But add creativity to that and splash bang shazam. It’s a fabulous way to move outside your comfort zone and refresh your perspective on your particular creative line of work.

It was exhilarating to try to sprinkle juuust the right amount of powdered sugar atop my cakes, and even figuring out how to transport and store (cream cheese frosting can’t just be left out on the counter apparently, whooops) and cut my cake creation was pure fun.

When you push yourself to create something outside your usual, your eyes are opened to the nuances of someone else’s craft–and you know what’s comin next is a sentence about applyin’ those discoveries to your own art.

It doesn’t have to be a science, the application part. I’m not going to pretend like I made a chart of comparison–oh, sifting the powdered sugar on top was like editing in Photoshop–noo no no. Just the exercise of trying something new but still creative is in itself enough to expand you as an artist.

Some people might advise you to start small, and don’t try to do everything from scratch and from recipes you’ve never known anyone who’s tried and for a huge crowd your first time, for Pete’s sake.

But I am kind of all about rule breaking. Intentional or not.

So if it feels most comfortable (but exciting!) to start small, and you’re mostly scared spitless, go that path. But if you want to go big, whatever that looks like, oh mah goodness, you have my blessing.

Whether you’re baking a few cakes or wanting to try professional video, if you’re heart is itching for it, let’s give ourselves permission to do. Even if you don’t know the first thing about frosting or focusing. Even if your new creative avenue goes absolutely nowhere. Just because you try something and it works out doesn’t bind you to any next step. And of course, if it’s a royal mess that doesn’t mean your dreams of adding video to your wedding photography offerings are dashed forever.

This idea of branching out creatively is to:

1. Refresh your love for your main squeeze

2. Give you new perspective and creativity in dealing with problems in your business

3. Give you permission to try new things that may or may not show up in your business down the road.

Has there been something creative floating around that you’re anxious to try? A new blog, basket weaving, baby hair bows custom gift wrapping flower arranging calligraphy a memoir of your childhood? I’d be tickled to hear about it, in the comments or an email at brookebschultz @ gmail.com

Keep living your wildly creative life, mlove!

And, just in case you’re interested, the recipe for my cake here, and the frosting here. (The frosting was like whoa. Best I’ve ever had probs. just bein real. The cake, a little too crumbly for my liking but still really good.)

Cozy Winter Engagement Inspiration

December 6, 2013 •

I am continually humbled and grateful and awed at the fabulous and downright nice people I get to meet through this work. I’m elated when someone sees something in my work the want to be part of, and the fates aligned to have that happen for this shoot. The vendors and I create the best beauty when we give ourselves a focus but then just let it unfold. Always it’s different than what I imagine in my little head, but it transforms

into something bigger and better. I love seeing talented people at work, and for this shoot we all just let each other do what we do best and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the result. Cozy up, my friends, and let’s cuddle the cold away. Thank you to all the wonderful people who made this shoot not only possible but beautiful. See the feature on Style Me Pretty here. Tawnya + Matt: Utah State Capitol Wedding

November 20, 2013 •

I had the lovely pleasure of tagging along with Valory Jean Photography to document Tawnya and Matt’s big day. They were married in the Salt Lake temple, and then after rain and scares of more rain and that one time I broke the vase that was holding Tawnya’s bouquet (when I say I’m the clumsiest person alive, I am not joking), we headed to the Capitol for a perfectly clear and gorgeous evening. It all overflowed with love and bliss…and a rockin dance party.

Do we miss summer light yet? Siiiigh.

Interested in wedding photography that captures the real alive magic and beauty of your day, emotions and all? I just might be your lady. See pricing for wedding photography packages here.

Erica + Joe: Salt Lake City Bridals

November 14, 2013 •

Erica and Joe are getting married today.

They are stunning together. It’s just obvious how happy they make each other, and that crazy huge happiness is what makes beauty. It makes my heart sing when couples fit together in perfect comfort and quiet giggles and inside jokes and silly faces like these two.

Also, can we talk about that necklace?!

Like what you see? There’s more where that came from. See the details for wedding photography packages and all around magic here.
