Geneva + Chris: Chic Thanksgiving Point Wedding

July 23, 2012 •

Geneva and Chris are such a warm, wonderful couple–their wedding day was overflowing with laughter and joy and the joining of two incredible people, plus two incredible families. One of the things I love best about weddings is witnessing the lovey family togetherness that comes when two people decide to intertwine their lives for the rest of forever. That kind of crazy happiness is magnetic; everyone else can’t help but come along.

Geneva and Chris were married in the Bountiful temple and continued the fun at Hidden Falls at Thanksgiving Point. These two really care about people, and wanted their day to revolve around spending time with all the loved ones who made an effort to be with them. Geneva’s easy laugh and Chris’ quiet care for those he loves were a true gift to document.

Geneva and Chris, I wish you so much love and joy to fill up your lives with your freshly formed adorable family.

Geneva, Chris, Pelfreys and Carvers: Thank you so much for letting me be part of such a beautiful and wonderful day. What a treat!

My Lifelong Perfume Search + Choosing a Photographer

July 20, 2012 •

Confessions of a true perfume-a-holic:

I search for perfume constantly.

Sometimes–well, a lot of times–my shopping plans revolve around how much perfume I can sample. We gotta park by Nordstrom, because I need to do my sampling first and then see how I feel throughout the rest of the mall, wearing Marc Jacobs’ latest or Coach’s classic.

I’m surprised the Sephora folks didn’t bar me from the premises when I proceeded to sample every.bottle.in.the.store the first time I went in that glorious place. and by ‘sample’ I mean spray them on the testers and stick them in my purse, and then into my clothing drawers for months. And when my friend’s dad picked us up from the mall, he said, “Wow.” Sometimes ‘wow’ is a good thing. Sometimes it is nice code for, you smell like a chemical plant dipped in eighty nine kinds of flowers, and you leave a vicious flowery tornado behind you wherever you walk.

But I was in love.

For all my love of perfume, I rarely buy actual bottles of actual perfume. I scoop up armfuls of body mist and the like, because I haven’t found something I love enough to commit to a full bottle of full strength eau de parfum. Every trip, I get my hopes up and think my smell soulmate might just have arrived, and we’ll ride off into the sunset together–but I leave, every time, smelling of someone’s latest attempt and brow furrowed.

This search has been so long in the making that I’ve wondered, in a small voice:

is it possible there will never be the perfume for me?

Maybe you’ve been on the hunt for the perfect photographer for you for a long time, and you’re discouraged. Why isn’t there someone out there who gets it?! You’re wondering. You might be at the point of wanting to tear out your hair. Just hold off on that for a sec, k? I want to take pretty pics of that hair before you rip it out.

See, choosing a photographer is like choosing a perfume.

Go with me here.

The first thing you see is the packaging of the perfume–the oh-so-gorgeous bottle with its pretty little ribbon and the tantalizing name of the darn thing. Who doesn’t want to smell like ‘happy’, or ‘beautiful’? Yep.

For photographers, this is their logo and the design of their website. Does the photographer’s logo and website resonate with you? Do you find it ridiculously hard to navigate their website? It’s okay to give up if these things aren’t floatin’ your boat. (Remember when that was the cool thing to say? Wooo 7th grade!) Photographers spend a lot of time and money creating websites, logos, and other doodads that represent them and their brand.

So the bottle is beautiful, the packaging makes your heart sing, and you’re ready to lean in and smell.

You inhale.

The top notes are heavenly.

This is the photographer’s portfolio. The best foot is put forward here, and you’ll start to see themes. Is there a particular edit that makes you want to barf? Move along and keep smelling, sista. Does this photographer seem to be more documentary, or is there an apparent posing to the photographs? Most of all, how does their portfolio make you feel? If you find your brow furrowing or your mouth frowning, even if you can’t put words to it, seriously: don’t go any further. Trust your gut on this one.

But, if the initial work you see makes your soul soar, you’re ready for the middle notes of this photographer’s scent. (Is this going too far? I’m kind of obsessed.)

The middle notes of a perfume are apparent after a little while on your skin. This is scrolling through the photographer’s blog and/or seeing a full wedding/shoot at a consultation–this is the heart of the perfume, and the heart of what you’ll experience and receive through working with a photographer.

Still love what you see and hear?

Awesome.

The base notes of a perfume are what’s left lingering after hours of wear–with a photographer, it’s the feeling you have after interacting with him or her. Do you still feel excited out of your mind to work with him or her? If not, for real: this is the great thing about there being so many photographers out there today: you can find one whose work you love and whose personality meshes with yours.

Now let’s talk price.

If I could find this elusive perfect perfume I’ve been searching for for years, I would pay a whole lot of money–because the experience is a million percent worth it to me.

For me, the joy of waking up and splashing a few drops of pure liquid happiness and pleasure on my wrists would warrant me dropping some serious cash.

It would be an investment in my joy in waking up and wanting to face each day with confidence and wild love.

And if someone, say, Walmart, proclaimed to me that they had the perfect soulmate perfume for me for the low price of $19.99 I would not believe it, and I would run in the opposite direction. Is it possible that the $19.99 perfume could smell amazing? Yeah. But if Walmart doesn’t value that perfume for what it’s worth to me, why would I value it that way? It’s possible a photographer could be amazing and only charge you a fraction of what you might pay for the same photographs–but if that photographer doesn’t know the value of her work, why should you value it?

This is the tough part about hiring a photographer.

If you really care about photographs–if you really care about the experience of waking up every day to the lusciously custom personal art on your wall of the people you love most–your soulmate photographer is not going to be the equivalent of the $19.99 Walmart perfume.

She will know the value of the photographs she’s going to create with you. She will want to do those photographs justice with the highest quality products. And she knows that when you make the mistake of using the $19.99 Walmart photographer, it’s a complete waste of your time and money because that perfume is going in the trash after one use.

High quality photographs are an investment–and I want to make sure you find the most incredible photographer for your style and your soul. So–if you’re not completely sure if I’m the photographer for you, that’s 100% fine. Let’s chat about it! And, if we don’t end up being a good fit, I’m more than happy to recommend other professionals who will give you what you want better than I can. (because I don’t believe in photographer competition, remember?)

But if we are soul mates? Whoa. We’re gonna create amazing things. I can’t wait.

Brooke Schultz is a photographer who is only a little bit obsessed with perfume. This summer she’s fulfilling her lifelong dream of being a blonde, and she would love to photograph you and the people you love most in the world–she would also love to give you the inside scoop on life overflowing with creativity and soulful photographs by lettin’ you on The Soul Train. (clicky clicky that pretty coral tab on the left and jump on it!)

Breanna + William: Fresh Texas Wedding

July 18, 2012 •

Breanna and William are simply incredible people. They are so warm, so kind, and so generous–it was such a thrill to be part of their wedding. (P.S. Their engagement session was one of my very favorites! Look at the two of them! They are pretty!)

It never ceases to amaze me how much people can care for each other–and that it can show up in the smallest of ways. I feel so lucky that couples like Breanna and William crack open their tender relationship for me to see and document, and I am always changed by seeing such wonderful love.

Breanna and William come with wonderful families, too–the kind that will still speak to you even after you’ve made wedding blunder history with an epic Fall Fail.

It was a beautiful (if hot!) day full of gorgeous things and wonderful people, laughter and flowers and the most delicious Texas BBQ.

I adore adventurous grooms and groomsmen. So fabulous.Favorite.

William’s ring=awesome. It says ‘Breanna and William’ in Arabic. That’s right, I have the coolest couples with the best taste. Woowooo!

Oh my goodness, Breanna and William, thank you so very much for letting me be part of your most special and wonderful day. It is a memory I will treasure–like, for real. You both are absolutely amazing.

That One Time When I Fell Over At A Wedding

July 16, 2012 •

We were all really hot. And really sweaty. Houston in late June? Not a recipe for hours of happy happy family photos. I needed to get this ish done quick.

So I’m trying to get the entire group (read: family, friends, er’body) and the temple in the shot. Problem: There are bushes, dirt, rosebushes, and a fountain right where I need to stand. How dare they. But it was one of those manicured, super-stiff bushes, so I thought: “I can maybe just sit on this a little bit, I only need like 5mm more to get everyone in the shot…”

And then,

I fell.

Backwards. I’m pretty sure in slow motion.

Over/through the bush, into the dirt and also, not-so-conveniently, the rosebushes. Sans roses.

Lucky for you, in my frantic falling state, I snapped a photo:

Not really sure what was going through my mind at that point–maybe something like, “I’m goin down, omg, I might die down here! Oh, my, if I die, nobody will be here to take photos so I need to get this shot, and they will still like me even though I died in the middle of their wedding…”

The strap of my dress (long, thankfully!) got sliced by a thorn, there was a lot of dirt down there, and it was a whole lot harder than it looked to get up (the bush was still.in.my.way) –I was a hot mess. Thankfully everyone was incredibly nice about my hilarious mishap, although I did hear more than a few “Man, I wish I had a camera!”s.

Why do I share this ridiculousness with you? Because despite all my efforts to be professional and keep it together, I just might fall over at your wedding while trying to get the perfect shot. But that makes me a human, and my humanness is also what allows me to create moving art. I’m not attempting to create a flawless persona online, showing only perfectly coiffed images along with the most annoyingly manicured descriptions of my oh-so-perfect life. Nope, I’m keepin’ it real  along with the art I create.

Hopefully I made up for The Fall Fail with images like this:

Much more of this gorgeous wedding to come.

Kat + Micah: Aspen Grove Bridals

July 11, 2012 •

Kat and Micah are my favorite kind of love: not flashy or showy, just comfortable. I get the feeling they’re each other’s rock, the calming force in each other’s lives. Their love for each other shows up in a thousand small ways–and that kind of comfort and intimacy makes for the most beautiful photographs, I have to say.

Kat and Micah met while Kat was in high school, and have seen each other through more years than a lot of couples have been married. They share a love for music, animals, and the outdoors and they’re the kind of people that can make anyone feel instantly at home the second you meet them.

These two lovely people are tying the knot this weekend and!

I can’t WAIT.

Such a fun First Look!

Micah’s ring is one of my very favorite men’s rings I have EVER seen. He’s a carpenter and loves all things railroad and train, so it was the perfect fit. Can I say enough about how much I love it when couples personalize details to fit their love and personalities? The answer is NO, so expect me to keep on sayin’ it.

Lyndsi Shae + Ken: Handmade San Diego Wedding

July 6, 2012 •

There can never be enough said about Lyndsi Shae and Ken. They’ve already got six years of history under their belts, but now they’re in the sweet beginnings of a fresh new thing, and that thing is marriage. A marriage that started with a wedding day that was absolute perfection: a pretty great sign of things to come, if you ask me.

They were both so calm the whole day: it just made sense. It made sense to be there, together, getting married for the rest of forever. I kept bugging my eyes out at Lyndsi Shae waiting for her to freak out and jump up and down, but everything going on was deeper than that. Lyndsi Shae and Ken are so solid and grounded in each other, it felt like being with a seasoned married couple, and the way they floated through the day was heavenly.

Lyndsi Shae is the most wonderfully low-maintenance woman I’ve ever met. Sit down in the sand? Sure. Twirl in the ocean? Yes please. The whole day was blissful and slow, no rush to be anywhere at all, just celebratin’ and feelin’ the love all over the place. Just how a wedding day should be.

I’m ‘un keep tellin’ you the story while you see the photographs we made.

The back of Lyndsi Shae’s dress was made from her grandmother’s wedding dress!

Lyndsi Shae’s mom handmade ALL.the.flowers. out of fabric. They were amazing.

Such a beautiful first dance.

The biggest and best congratulations, Lyndsi Shae and Ken!

I have so much love for you.

Featured: Style Me Pretty

July 5, 2012 •

I am so very thrilled to be featured on Style Me Pretty today!

My darling friend Calie of Calie Rose Floral and Event Design approached me about doing a styled shoot and I’m just amazed at the magic we cooked up together. I feel like I’ve birthed a child.

I’ve always been inspired by the raw as well as the traditionally beautiful–and the unexpected makes me swoon. We decided to marry the two ideas for a rustic and bright brunch: natural, woodsy elements with a whole lotta flower power combined with bright, sassy colors and modern elements. I tire easily of ‘perfectly coiffed’ and ‘high-maintenance,’ so we decided to give the shoot a laid-back unfussy feel with casual brunch, mismatched bridesmaids attire, jacketless men and a glammed-up picnic table.

A huge, huge thank you to all the vendors involved in this project–I really could not have done it without your incredible talents and support.

See the full feature here.

P.S. A post of the whole shoot comin’ soon!

Rachel + Jacob: Liberty Park Engagements

July 3, 2012 •

Rachel is one of those people who steals your heart the second you meet her–she could be best friends for life with…oh, anyone. She’s so warm and bubbly and delightfully sassy and gosh, she’s just so cute–not in a pinch-your-cheeks way, but in a graceful way that makes everything she does adorable and magnetic. I knew she had to have a man to match, and Jacob is the perfect fit. The two of them have such a wonderful rhythm–that’s what you get when you’ve been together as long as they have–add their zest for life and support of each other and you’ve got an amazing relationship and forever-long love.

They started out as friends way back in high school, and when Jacob joined the military Rachel always kept in touch. While Jacob was stationed in California Rachel flew out every weekend, and after seemingly unbearable months in Afghanistan Jacob is home for good! When couples have experienced life together, especially having been apart from each other, I love seeing them more strongly and deeply tied together. It’s so beautiful to witness.

Rachel and Jacob: wonderfully sweet and so darn likable. (Also incredibly good looking.)

Rachel and Jacob brought their two dogs, Lily and Baxter, along for the shoot. It was so much fun, even if the pups didn’t feel like cooperating. We let them do their thang.

How adorable is Baxter? Rachel adopted him when he was abandoned and has taken him under her wing. I told you she was ridiculously sweet.

I love when couples bring things that are meaningful to them to our sessions–when Jacob was in Afghanistan, Rachel would look at this globe and think of him. Plus, who can resist monogrammed Anthro mugs?

AND? Turns out Jacob is a mad-awesome salsa dancer, and Rachel’s got a few moves herself. =)

Oh, Rachel and Jacob, it was such a thrill to be with you and see the depth of your love. Cannot wait for your wedding!

Coming Soon…

June 27, 2012 •

June 3.

I looked around in the internet for you today. for your words, because I miss reading them. It was your words that made me love you, before I knew you all that well in real life.

But I didn’t find you. you haven’t publicly shared your words in a while, although I don’t doubt you’re scribblin away in your journal full of cut-out pictures that inspire you and cool pens with fun colors all screaming out your pizzazz and zest and faith, that wild and carefree way of loving life you have, all wrapped up in the most honest transparency I’ve ever seen.

I’m sure you’re scribblin away because you’re getting married in less than two weeks, and I’m going to be there for it. Making photographs of you and your new man that you will be with forever and ever. And I see the way he cares for you and it makes me ridiculously happy.

But when I knew you deep we were driving together to Claire’s wedding, overflowing with Missy Higgins and trees and trees on every side of us. When I knew you deep we had this really unique relationship–maybe you had it with a lot of people, but you were the only one like that for me. The relationship where we hardly ever talked about the details of things like our grades or I don’t even know what else people small talk about, but we always talked big things. Big things like relationships, our life dreams and we buoyed each other up over greasy grilled cheese more than once and told each other we could do these big things, no problem!

Sometimes I miss knowing you deep, single and unsure and moving through the world intense because we knew there was a whole lot riding on every decision.

When I knew you deep I had faith that I thought was as big as yours. Reading your 2010 words, though, I know you understand a lot of things I don’t. You wrote them in ways that made huge sense, and I wanted to talk to God the way you talked to Him. I wanted to know myself as intricately as you did, understanding as if it were plain as day the perfect way to describe your state of being, and it was always optimistic even if you were afraid.

You give strength with what you have to say.

I want you to know that I want to hear what you have to say, always. Someday, when your words are big and official in a bound book sold at stores I will buy a hundred copies and give them to homeless people instead of a few dollars.

When your words are huge and all over the world I will be the same percent proud that I know someone with such a connection to the Maker of the Universe,

someone so spirited and soulful.

This is who this woman is. And here she is, bustin’ with joy on the day she was married to the most wonderful man.

Can’t wait to share more! But first, off to Houston for this lovely wedding.
