Portland in Film: Personal Work

December 18, 2012 •

In October we made the 12 hour road trip to see my brother and his wife in Portland–it was all of us siblings in the car like old times, munching on snacks and getting just a little bit cranky by the end of it all. We ate delicious food, saw some sites, enjoyed being together in the freshest of fresh air.

I brought only the Canonet, and boy am I glad.

Film makes me feel deliberate and alive.

Have you heard about $100 winter mini sessions? Snap those up quick, folks.

With all the heartache and sadness around these last few days, I’ve been re-realizing that there is just no time. No time to wait for the perfect time to capture your family, you, the ones you love. You’ll always be able to find an excuse; this winter, I’m giving you a hundred reasons to throw those out the window, say yes to your life, and have your world documented right here and now. So yep: this January-March, $100 gets you a 30 minute session and 10 hi-res digital files, edited and primped and preened with print release for you to cover your walls, floors and ceilings with the beauty we’re going to create together. (Of course, I gotta warn you: gorgeous professional prints and albums made of the finest materials might steal your heart–these lovely daily reminders of how good your life is will be available to mini session peeps.)

Summer + Peter: Provo Temple Bridals

December 14, 2012 •

It’s impossible that there could be a couple more perfect for each other than Summer and Peter. They fit together in every way, from their Hollywood-worthy kisses to their goofy, groovy dancing and the way they just grin when they look at each other. All who know them will forever be grateful to Natasha for setting them up on that fateful summer night–through a relationship across the country and different life plans and job searching and oh-so-much-more, Summer and Peter’s love is the real deal.

Congratulations, you two.

The film!

See Summer and Peter’s engagement session here!

And stay tuned for their wedding, coming soon! Interested in getting yourself and the ones you love in front of my camera? Find the deets here.

Rachelle: Lifestyle Portraits

December 11, 2012 •

Rachelle gets it.

I love what she wrote in an email to me after our session: “No one knows what anyone looks like anymore with the seventies filters of Instagram, scotopic vision of iPhones, and radium/copper of arsenite sickly greens of people specifically taking iPhone photos in bathrooms. I feel like a tangible being now!”

She makes me squeal with delight.
We meandered around her neighborhood and ended up in her apartment with some of her favorite books and magazines, and captured Rachelle on an uneventful day. Here’s to hoping more glorious souls like Rachelle understand the big-ness of their lives, enough to document them–with or without a huge life event.

And Rachelle, thank you for allowing me the absolute privilege to photograph you. You are a wonder.

Interested in some professional yet down-to-earth portraits of your own? See another lifestyle portrait session and Let’s talk about it, lovely!

Merry Christmas from Baby Schultz.

December 7, 2012 •

It still seems so surreal to me, like I’m living someone else’s life, or watching mine through aquarium glass. I can’t quite get my brain around it, but it’s the truth:

Jared and I are expecting a little one! Yep: I’m pregnant. With a human child.

Baby Schultz will arrive April 28, 2013, they say.

And we’re just so excited but we’ve never done this before and I have no idea how to do it except to just trust all the love I have bustin inside me for this little baby but I’m scared and thrilled and curious and filled with any and every emotion you can imagine.

I daydream about soft fuzzy clothes but don’t have a clue about strollers. (There are like 76948 different kinds. Did you know?!) I keep waiting for the wave to crash over my head, the one where I want to read mommy blogs and parenting books and research this thing to death, but I don’t feel it. I feel peaceful. And sometimes panicky, but. Even though this is the biggest life change I’ll ever experience, it feels mostly natural. I keep reminding myself that people do this mom thing every day, so I guess I can do it, too.

I approach most things in life from a place of passion–and I rely on my burning love for music or people or photography to help me work out the nuts and bolts that I’m so very not good at. Hi, I’m Brooke, crazy creative with a whole lotta soul and big picture vision but zero genius in the way of logistics. But I’ve got that burning love for this baby–fierce, huge kind that feels like it could swallow me whole. And that love makes me think I’ll do okay with non-dreamy things like picking out a stroller.

I can’t wait to meet this little human. We find out if it is a boy human or a girl human in 5 days, so stay tuned.

Thanks for celebrating this big life thing with me, friends.

The Zvirzdins: At-Home Family Session

December 4, 2012 •

The Zvirzdins are such a fun, laid-back family: the kind of people who embrace life’s little moments with open hearts. Elise and her two boys have such a sweet relationship–it was a joy to photograph them playing outside, riding bikes, reading, having a snack, jumping on the bed. I’m just so crazy about this whole day-in-the-life documenting of families: it’s thrilling to be able to tell a family’s story in such a simple and beautiful way.

Thank you for letting me into your home and your life, Zvirzdins!

An Overflowing Life.

November 30, 2012 •

I never know quite how I feel about lengthy gratitude lists, or even the one-thankful-thing-per-day-in-November. I’ve never been much for jumping on bandwagons–even if they work for some people.

But I just gotta say that my life is so good. It’s overflowing with loving relationships, beauty, the chance to create, pursuits that light me up, an incredible family.

Annnnd you just know you’re living the high life when you’re at Laguna beach in November and it’s not even cold.

Happy Thanksgiving, friends.

Rachel + Jacob: Salt Lake City Memorial House Wedding

November 27, 2012 •

Rachel and Jacob’s wedding day was full of the beautiful moments that make me thank my lucky stars that I get to photograph weddings. From having to put on the dress twice and Rachel’s sweet tears during their First Look to Jacob’s perpetual grin, gorgeous details, and the flurries of bear hugs and happy squeals, the day was exactly what a wedding day should be: a beautiful culmination of two people’s love for each other.

Rachel and Jacob have hearts of gold, and I couldn’t ask for a more rich love story to tell. Theirs is full of life together through thick and thin, surrounded by a group of the kindest friends and family you’ll ever know.

Rachel and Jacob, thank you, so very much, for allowing me to be part of your special day. It was an honor.

Lana + Marcus: Riverwood Engagement

November 16, 2012 •

Lana and Marcus are one of those couples everyone is in love with. They’re living proof that we’re not all crazy, thinking that real and lasting love actually exists; and in the same moment they are so down to earth. These two are a blast to be around, and their happiness is contagious. Try to look at these photos without grinning–not possible, people.

We meandered around the Riverwoods, complete with fall leaves, tickling, and plenty of laughs at the ridiculous things I asked these two to do–I know clients and I are meant to be when they’re up for anything.

Lana and Marcus, thank you so much for letting me in on your incredible love. It’s a joy to witness!

Freshly engaged and in need of some beautiful capturing of you and your love? Let’s chat about it.
