Vienna + The Homemade Bow

September 25, 2013 •

YES. It’s true. I sewed a headband for Miss V. and I feel disproportionately proud of it, hence a lotta pictures. Shout out to Grammy who helped hand-hold me through the process and calm my hyperventilating when the sewing machine came out.

If you wanna know, I used this jersey knit baby headband tutorial. Super easy, even for non-crafty folk like me.

I am in love with this baby. She is my favorite.

Ayley + Adam: Bridals

September 16, 2013 •

Ayley and Adam are two of my favorite people. Their love story is straight from a book and the way they take care of each other is simply beautiful.

They met on the subway.

Yeah.

And Adam was just like, I have to talk to that girl. And he kept talking to her, even when she blew him off.

I could photograph their love all day every day and never get tired of it, because they’re soulful and passionate and still real. There’s so many facets to that kind of love, I just know it could never fade or shrivel up. It’s like, I want these photos to prove it. I wanted to make photos as beautiful as this relationship they share. And it’s one of those moments I struggle, because I just can’t do it.

But I think these photos are pretty beautiful.

So that tells you how friggin’ incredible their love is in real life.

The First Look. If you are even a little bit thinking about doing this, oh man. Prepare to be convinced. Adam was so excited and just full of emotion and love during the first look, and he said the most beautiful things to Ayley. I feel like it’s unholy to write them here, they were so just gorgeous. Personal Work: Flower Afternoon

September 12, 2013 •

Val of Flower Afternoon is just a really lovely person. She’s down to earth but crazy talented and also a beaut to boot.

We got together for a little flower fun on a whim and here are the photos we made.

This is what I want to be doing in the world–creating beauty.

Some people don’t think it’s a lot and some people think it’s everything but I’m content to know it’s somewhere in the middle. A big deal sometimes, and other times, just fun. I see both in these images.

And a hiphiphooray for shooting film again! I woke up from a long winter of uncertainty and I’ve started experimenting anew and you’re about to see.

Model Call! Fall! Styled Shoot! Excitement!

September 10, 2013 •

Hi friends! I’ve been cooking up some scarycool ideas and today they were just bustin’ out of me and I got so giddy–and now I need your help.

I’m looking for a lovely couple who just can’t get enough of each other to model for a styled wedding shoot this fall in the Salt Lake City Utah area. You’ll be paid in the form of some pretty snazzy photographs of you and your favorite person.

I’ll tell you that my work has been featured in Martha Stewart Weddings, Style Me Pretty, Ruffled, Wedding Chicks, and a smattering of other local and national publications if it’ll convince you to volunteer and send me some pics of you and your love. 🙂

This styled shoot is gonna be a little different than the usual. I can’t tell you about it here, cause shhh! It’s top secret. As long as you’re up for an adventure, I want you. (Don’t worry–nothing scary.)

Brooke Brooke! I’m in love and I wanna model! What do I do?

Send me some photos of the two of you at brookebschultz @ gmail.com and tell me a little about your relationship, along with any scheduling restraints you’ve got goin on this fall (Sept-Nov).

It’s prettty much that easy.

I’ll reply to every email, so if you don’t hear back in 48 hours double check to make sure I’ve received your photos.

P.S. I also need a florist for this beautiful madness so if you’re one of those, get at me! Same deal: brookebschultz @ gmail.com

Garrett + Alisha: Maternity

September 6, 2013 •

Gosh I have a good looking family.

Garrett and Alisha entrusted me with their engagement photos–my very first real shoot, and now they’re expecting a little girl. Of course she’s already betrothed as Vienna’s best friend for life, and we’re all dying to meet her.

These two make my job easy. Like I would look up and be about to say something and they’d already be doing it easy.

One time in the future Alisha is going to teach a class on how to weeerk the camera. Cause she’s got it. She laughs and blames it on high school vanity, but I don’t believe it. We all went through that stage and didn’t come out with these kind a skillz.

I feel so tenderly about these photos, because it seems simultaneously yesterday and a whole lifetime ago that I was in her shoes, waiting. Growing, stretching, expanding–in all ways–finding all kinds of aches and strange sensations my body never felt before. And a little thing is rolling around in your belly, punching your ribs and forcing you to down whole containers of Tums. You feel uncertain and swollen and scared and thrilled and ecstatic but calm, warrior-womanly. Everyone’s like, “it’s such a beautiful time!” and you’re like, “I just feel like a whale.”  But it really is beautiful, the things your woman body can do.

It seems like one of those times you can’t fully experience the beauty of until it’s in hindsight. I hope these photos, Alisha mlove, help you more fully experience your glowing beauty right this second. You are a vision and I am so thrilled your family is growing. You and Garrett will be angels to that little babe.

Is Your Mom Running Your Business?

September 3, 2013 •

blogs for photographersThis is my mom. (Yeah, my dad’s there, too–more about him lata.)

My mom is so many things–talented, beautiful, thoughtful, generous…just all around incredible.

She gives me reallly great advice about so many things, including my business. I call her and tell her absolutely everything.

But she doesn’t run my business.

Sometimes we forget one of the most joyously joyful things about running our own business: making the decisions.

And when we’re forgettin this magnificent thing, we turn it into something evil and burdensome and we just want someone else to do it for us.

So we call our moms or our significant others or our dogs and ask what we should do about this situation with this client. And do you think I should offer canvases? And what should I charge for this type of session? Is it okay to blog this photo?

Then, before we know it, we’re tangled up in other people’s opinions whose opinions actually have nothing to do with our business goals. Half the time, the advice we follow comes from people who aren’t even our target market. Silliness.

Don’t get me wrong: moms give some stinkin’ great advice. I’m not saying you’re not allowed to call your sweet mother and bawl about a client that didn’t come through or ask her what she thinks about how you’re doing things. But the bottom line has to remain that YOU ARE THE BOSS.

Your mom knows a lot about life. She might even know everything about photography AND even know everything about running a successful business. (Welll….let’s go with it.) But. but. but. She does not know everything about running your photography business. She doesn’t know exactly how exhilarating photographing a fabulous wedding is for you, and she can’t know exactly how excruciating the thought is of offering canvases to your clients even though you’d probably make a jillion dollars because you hate them. She can’t decide how many clients you should take on this year because she doesn’t know how much time you need to spend with your babies for the sheer sake of your sanity.

She might have a pretty good idea about these things, so yes. Talk to her and ask her what she thinks, but forthelove:

Run your own business, deliberately and joyfully!

Or don’t. Nobody is forcing you to have this business. If it’s not working for you, get out. (Imagine that said with love. It was definitely typed with love.)

I was a little bit whining to my people the other night because as an entrepreneur my work is never done, and my to-do list is always a mile long, and I’ve thought so much about these seventy five changes that just aren’t finished yet, and bleeblahblee.

And THEN I re-remembered how freaking awesome it is that I get to decide those seventy five changes and when they get done. I get to decide when I work and who I want to photograph and how it’s gonna look and EVERY THING. It’s one of the reasons photography and entrepreneurship are such a good fit for me.

So what if you know photography is your soulmate but you hate making decisions?

First, you gotta know which decisions you hate. Is it all of em? Cause if yes, well, maybe you and photography are soulmates, but you and business might not be. You have a gut feeling about this already, I’m thinking.

But if you only hate deciding one thing, could you outsource it to someone who might be better at it than you? (album design? logo? which photo of me is the best for my ‘about’ page? packaging? Yehaw.)

If yes, cha-ching. You done. Stop reading and go hire someone to make that decision for you!

But if no, let’s keep exploring.

Do you hate that decision 100% of the time, or only on Saturdays? Only in the morning? Find your peak time to tackle icky decisions and check it off your list, babe. Better yet, be accountable to someone for what you’re gonna decide in the next 24 hours. (Start with your mom! Yess!)

If you need someone to be accountable to, I’m here for you man. Tell me in the comments or via email at brookebschultz @ gmail.com what decision you’ve been hemming and hawing over that you’re going to make in the next 24 hours!

WOOP for running your own biz with bliss!

Candis + Andy: Bridals at Home

August 29, 2013 •

Okay, it’s no secret that I freakin’ love Candis and Andy. Their wedding was a dream, so when we got together for some relaxed photos afterward at the home they’re restoring I knew it was gonna be good. These two just do it right–handmade, laid back, but class and style for miles. It’s so obvious how much they adore each other, and that’s what makes my job so ridiculously easy. When it’s like this, you know there’s an unholy amount of squealing from me–oh, bless these wonderful souls who deal with this crazy photographer lady. (Even worse than crazy cat ladies, as they can testify.)

A million thanks, Candis and Andy, for allowing me the pleasure of capturing your beautiful relationship and the start of your incredible marriage. Your love is what people live for.

Jackie + Andy: Canyon Engagements

August 27, 2013 •

Jackie and Andy were high school sweethearts and now are living the dream in New York City–Andy as an actor, and Jackie as a makeup artist. But they miss the west coast dreadfully, and we all stood in awe at the incredible sunset and mountains and trees the night of our engagement session. Utah is a great place, folks.

It’s couples like Jackie and Andy that make me know I’m meant to do this art. They pored over the fine art album I showed them, loving every page. When Andy told me how much he liked the idea of having a tangible way to enjoy their wedding photos, I tried my best not to shriek and yelp and creepily ask to be their best friend for the rest of ever. My heart overflows when people want to give their photos a place to live, permanently, in the most gorgeous book with the finest materials, and they just get it. I went home beaming. Not just because they’re as thrilled as I am about albums, but because…well, you’re about to see. They love each other a lot and they let me see so I could show you and that’s just exhilarating.

Jackie and Andy, wow. I’m so honored to document your love, now and on your wedding day. I just think you’re swell.

Sarah Jane + Gil: Blissful Wadley Farms Wedding

August 20, 2013 •

Sarah Jane and Gil are the stuff of fairytales–but down to earth, so you know their love is just real. They’re a power couple, bound for glory and pure wedded bliss because their joy for living and each other is infectious. Sarah Jane and Gil have it all: fun, tenderness, romance, and commitment. You could tell everyone was sort of just in awe, like, can it really be this good? They have love so big it restores other people’s faith in relationships and marriage–watching them, you know it’s possible to have something incredible with another human being.

Their wedding day was full of oodles of people who love them–I’m pretty sure my cheeks hurt from all the grinning going on. They celebrated with cake and dancing and bubbles and flowers. There were happy tears and even happier laughs and not near as much sap as I’m headed toward in this sentence, so we best stop and gettothephotos.

Sarah Jane and Gil, you are wonderful and beautiful souls and I feel so lucky to have been part of the beginning of your lives together. Thank you with all of me.

Chantal + Jerry: Snowbasin Wedding

August 12, 2013 •

Chantal and Jerry met through Jerry’s sister, and they just compliment each other perfectly. Jerry is quietly romantic (he sent Chantal flowers every week through their courtship–I mean, come on.) and Chantal is the adventurous, friendly, happy-go-lucky counterpart. It just makes my heart sing when pairs like this find each other.

Chantal and Jerry’s wedding was pure wonder. They had me come to the cabin in Eden where Jerry and his family were staying to document Jerry’s hilarious nephews–oh, my, it was a treat. The rest of the day was full of laughter and joy, from their laid back reception at Snowbasin to the wicked dancing to the gondola rides…a really plain fabulous wedding.

Chantal and Jerry, thank you for entrusting me with your wedding day. You are a radiant pair and you’ll do wonders together.
